IV.  Reason for a Specific Approach: The Reference Frame

Thus, contrary to what seems to be the common opinion, let us make an effort to understand both sides in their essentials: for no one is without sin! Case in point: the reference frame must be a fundamental tool for both Astrology and Physics. Thus, each one of them must have specific ‘work instructions’ for this tool, which calls for a dedicated individual study of the reference frame from the viewpoint of its intended use. In reality, for Physics the reference frame is abstracted to features (origin and orientation) complying with the requirements of pure Geometry. One implicitly understands that whatever is reported in the treatment of a problem is discussed in terms of geometrical concepts related to such a definition of the reference frame. All that Physics takes into consideration regarding the evolution of reference frame are its geometrical transformations, i.e. rotations of axes and translations of the origin. Then the content of space within that reference frame needs to be expressed by physical magnitudes carrying a definite feature when referred to these transformations: scalars, vectors, tensors of different orders. In short, the geometrical view here has transferred the physical character into abstract notions, so that even the reference frame – which must be physical in its nature – is viewed out of physical content, as a pure geometrical entity. The same happens with Astrology: it too adopts a similar definition for the reference frame. Here, however, we sense the call for Astrology to reevaluate this definition in conformity with its own needs, because the whole reference frame participates in determining the situation of the individual located in its origin.

One might think that it is the Physics that should provide the whole concept, but as we have seen, one cannot be certain that Physics is correct the way it proceeds even regarding its own purposes. There does not seem to be another way, however, as long as the origin of a reference frame is taken just as an abstract point, and the whole reference frame is just a triad of unit vectors conveying orientation to Space. The reason we place the emphasis on the origin of the reference frame is that this origin is everything for Astrology – its raison d’être – so it has to be described as an entity, not just as an abstract notion, and the very same should stand true for Physics. Indeed, it is worth remembering that a reference frame, a practically usable reference frame, must actually have all the properties of the space it describes, except one: the motion.
